Yu-chan no Megane

While most of the world uses the word manga to denote Japanese comic books, the Japanese use it to include anime as well and that’s what I mean by the page title.

I’ve watched more anime than I’ve read manga as it’s so much easier to watch a series than to read it painsakingly in original Japanese. The English translations leave little to be desired and I can barely read Chinese (Traditional or Simplified) without problems. Nonetheless, manga is something I really enjoy, whichever form it takes.

I racked up a huge list of anime that I’ve watched. While I follow some closely like Kimi Kiss Pure Rouge and Naruto Shippuuden, there are others which I’ve seen and didn’t quite like. All in all, I’ve seen quite a bit and I’ll dedicate this page to those I really do love and hopefully provide a mini-review of why I don’t like some others.

Favourite Anime

Ouran High School Host Club 『桜蘭高校ホスト部』 was probably one of the earliest anime I watched (which is pretty late in life considering how old I am) and which tipped me quite irrevocably into the abyss that is anime decadence. While I’ve yet to reach otaku status, I did enjoy the moe aspects of this anime.

Fujioka Haruhi is a poor scholarship student at Ouran, a fancy-schmancy school for the filthy rich. In fact, a girl who gets mistaken for a very pretty boy when she stumbles into the Third Music Room one day while on the search for a quiet spot to study. Instead, she chances (rather unceremoniously) on the Host Club, which is filled with handsome bishounen, who do nothing but entertain ladies for the sake of making them happy. Unfortunately, due to a mishap, Haruhi is endentured to the Host Club and is forced to work as a host. A male host.

The idiocy of the King of the Host Club, Suou Tamaki, in this anime is what sold me. I love his puppy dog antics and how ridiculously flamboyant he is. I also love his smooth, buttery voice, lent by none other than my ultimate favourite seiyuu, Miyano Mamoru 宮野 真守, whose personality doesn’t seem to be far from Tamaki’s. It’s really quite a funny anime although I didn’t appreciate the way it ended, rather suggestive of a relationship but yet nothing obvious. I wished desperately for a second season, but since it seems they painted themselves into a bit of a corner with the anime plot, I’ve long since given up on that idea.
